Legitimate Public Access in Kaloko?
At the end of Makahi Street, off Kaloko Mauka Drive, appears to be a system of public access trails, to my knowledge the first such in West Hawaii. I started hiking at about 8:00 a.m. and finished about 10:00, and because of the angle of the mountain, the temperature was cool throughout. It's very hot and humid today in town. There has been access to this area for a while, through/over fences, but now there are no fences, "keep out," "private property" or "no tresspassing" signs, only a trail going off to the right at the end of Makahi Street.
The trail takes you through your Hawaiian rain forest, with 'ohi'a trees as the canopy and tree ferns, hapu'u, predominate below. There is a lot that could be done as far as taking out non-native plants along the trail (banana poka for one), but the trail system is well maintained, and not that vertical at any point.
Many nice vistas along the way.
