Donkeys, Again

I'm reposting this picture because I've decided to post a picture with each post, because I think wiliwili trees are really beautiful trees, and because it's sort of green and red, for Christmas.
(ahem) I've mentioned this before, but this past weekend I noticed that all of the "Donkey Crossing" signs, some of which were taken down during repairs of the roadway, are back up. The only problem is, there are no donkeys crossing there, or anywhere near there. As noted by the Honolulu Star Bulletin, here, the donkeys were removed, unbeknownst to the Kona Community ( no story appeared in West Hawaii Today). Allegedly the donkeys were dangerous to drivers, but the real problem was the damage they did to the golf courses. In any case, without actual donkeys, one would think that the rationale for the five(!) warning signs posted on Queen Kaahumanu Highway would be gone. After all, why frighten drivers with the prospect of dangerous donkeys, if there are none around?
The truth, of course, is that the signs are up because they charm the tourists. Because having wild donkeys roaming across the landscape is cool. When there were actually donkeys there, it was cool. Too bad it's become a fraud, another scam to coax a little more money out of our visitors.
UPDATE: Re-read Star Bulletin article. Where's the so-called "paddock"??? Still no answer as to why the signs are still there.  Posted by Hello
