Sort of political, but not really. But sort of.

Virginia Isbell is running for County Council. Standing out on the highway, waving feebly at passing cars, she seems like a nice old lady. But her supporters were holding signs for her taped to canoe paddles. I wonder if that's a smart idea.

See, Virginia was in the State House years ago (back when she was in her late 80s, I think). Under her "leadership" the state began, but didn't finish, a canoe pavilion at the Old Airport Park. For about 10 years, the cement block pillars have been standing there, pathetically, without a roof on them, like some kind of cheesy Stonehenge.

So that's why I wonder if canoe paddles are really the best accessories for the Isbell campaign. Being, you know, reminders of her most visible failure.

Aloha John, the pics are awesome (little wonder you can make money selling them!)

Oh you are so right about the "old guard" people that are still running. With one exception and I may make you mad as I know that a lot of Kona people see this guy as the enemy, Harry Kim. I have met him and in the three years Ive been here I see that he is trying for both sides of the island and the roadblocks thrown in his way by the old guard just fry me! "Dont build a waste reduction facility in Hilo so what do we do with dah trash?" I cant believe these people! Arakaki trying to run illegally, and Helene Hale. God Bless her, she has done a great job but dah sistah is 97 for Pete's sake! Give it a rest and give someone else a chance to run. All the rest lets throw them out and start over! Fix the potholes and push the Feds to give up the money to put the roads in. We are like Kona down here in Puna one way in and one way out and its going to be a mess soon!

Great Op ed in yesterdays paper, where a citizen castigated the county council saying that the reapportionment is comming and the districts of Puna, Hamakua, the Konas and Kohallas are going to have more representation and pull and watch as things start changing. Also the folks that are moving there (like us) are not business as usual folks and the changes will happen.

Roads get built in Kona
Parks get developed in Kona
Build that Bypass road in Waimea NOW!
Get a second crew of road work guys for Kona side only. (Did you know we only have one striping and pot hole fixing pavement crew on this whole blessed island youd think we only had 10 miles of paved road or something!)
Hilo gets a Costco. (seriously)Build it out in Keaau lots of land out there.

Now if we could figure out how to build the road down by you through the middle of an old battlefield, that has 100s of gravesites. Smart planning that.
