Hot Hike to the Ocean

While the Patriots were destroying the Steelers, I walked out on the 1859 Mauna Loa flow that sits between Kiholo and Waikoloa. At 2:00 p.m. the black lava is damn hot. I was trying to trace the route of a 4-wheel road that I believe goes from the highway to the ocean. Unfortunately, about 3/4 of the way in, I lost the trail.
Here's what the red paint trail markers look like: paint.jpg
Here's a ramp somebody made, about 100 yards from the highway: DSCN0174.JPG
Is this a'a or pahoehoe? It's in the middle of a pahoehoe flow, and the pieces are flat and smooth, but it's jagged like a'a: aaorpahoehoe.jpg
Anyway, I made it to the ocean. I saw quite a few whales, but they refused to jump or spout when I pointed my camera at them. Bastards.
